Girl Behind the Doodle

Part One: The Starting Point

When did the doodling begin?

Well art has always been a passion. When I was five I did a drawing and was so excited and loved the drawing, and I still can recall the feelings I had over that first drawing, felt like a heavy crush that would become love. I had taken every red, pink white, skin tone, and made a layered circle of colorls but where you could see each color. And I loved the drawing and found strength in it.

Over the years I have mostly painted but in February of 2012 I was between contracts and had my new iPad and had just come back from a New York trip. This is where I had dinner with friends and one of them was illustrating on his ipad. I had postcards of my painting but the drawing on an ipad, now that was New York cool. He showed me his work and the app he used I was taken in, much like that very first drawing so many years ago.

My first ipad illustration was of sushi and it was realistic. But then I did a Day of the Dead skull and then another and then a C3PO doodle all in about 3 hours and posted them on facebook. And that is how I found out others would like the iPad doodle art too.

From there I did Star Online Pokies Wars to Dr. Who and all types of geek doodles. And I’m always on the verge of a new doodle and love to create them.

What would you say to someone that wanted to also doodle?

I actually encourage all people to doodle. For me it’s relaxing and energetic all in one. My mind gets to really relax and my pure feelings of balance and design take over and it’s like fluid visual music. By no means would I want to discourage that type of experience for anyone. I will doodle one way and others will doodle another. My handwriting is just not the same as the persone next to me so I don’t see a threat I see an art movement.

What program or supplies do you need to doodle?

I find that calm you want to find what materials make you happy to work in. I can go from pen and ink to ipad but I have been a digital artist for many years so it’s an easy jump for me. But if you want to doodle on the iPad here is what I use.

  • Ipad, but any type of tablet will work
  • A stylus is much easier to use than you finger and after hours of doodling your finger will begin to hurt.
  • An app used for illustration and there are a lot of free ones out there that you can use.
